Greetings, people who are reading this. Time has changed and evolved from our hard-working roots. With new inventions, life is gradually being made easier. Machines needed people to operate to mass produce goods in industries, creating more opportunities for citizens and immigrants alike. However, and many of you are already aware of it, but is life for workers easier? To investigate, I have collected diverse evidences. Here are a few examples.
“Two children I know got employment in a factory when they were five years old… the spinning men or women employ children if they can get a child to do their business… the child is paid one shilling or one shilling and six pence, and they will take that (five year old) child before they take an older one who will cost more." This was written by George Gould, a Manchester merchant. As you can see, child labor is being exploited to pay cheaper wages. "We went to the mill at five in the morning. We worked until dinner time and then to nine or ten at night; on Saturday it could be till eleven and often till twelve at night. We were sent to clean the machinery on the Sunday." This was from a man who worked in a factory when he was a kid. Even as a child, they had to work for more than 12 hours! Such inhumane work hours! “Woodward and other overlookers used to beat me with pieces of thick leather straps made supple by oil, and having an iron buckle at the end, drew blood almost every time it was applied." John Brown presented this to the public in the “Lion” newspaper, which showed the cruel punishment the supervisors committed. “"Sarah Golding was poorly and so she stopped her machine. James Birch, the overlooker, knocked her to the floor. She got up as well as she could. He knocked her down again. Then she was carried to her house.......she was found dead in her bed. There was another girl called Mary......she knocked her food can to the floor. The master, Mr. Newton, kicked her and caused her to wear away till she died. There was another, Caroline Thompson, who was beaten till she went out of her mind. The overlookers used to cut off the hair of any girl caught talking to a lad. This head shaving was a dreadful punishment. We were more afraid of it than any other punishment for girls are proud of their hair." This was from a previous factory worker. This, by far, is the cruelest of all. Innocent people are slaughtered because of extremely minor mistakes. Is all this what we had in mind?
To eradicate such inhumane treatment, one thing is clear. We must stop child labor. Do we want our next generation to be hate-filled adults so distorted by fear and pain that they would not further evolve our ever-changing economy? In fact, they could actually ruin our country because their punishing upbringing has made them brimming with ideals of abuse and cruel work conditions. After child labor is eradicated, we must make sure the people working in the factories stay in good, healthy conditions. Why? So we have enough workers to sustain factories! In turn, we can mass produce high quality goods that will sell for high prices. As a result, our country will be extremely powerful and this will set a good foundation for the future generations. Also, the supervisors must refrain from murder altogether, no matter how serious the mistake is. The police should deal with the wrong-doer. In addition, the supervisor must ASSIST in helping, instead of making it hard. Though they should not perform the labor itself, they should be providing encouragement and refreshments. If the supervisors do this, the work atmosphere would be incredibly comfortable and friendly, which will lead to better work effort. If this were to happen, we would not need to make work hours so incredibly long. This is detrimental to the worker’s health, as sleep is an important part.
If none of these changes were to happen, think about the consequences. Mindless murder of innocent children, women, and men because of negligible mistakes will continue on. If they are not slaughtered by the supervisors, they will have to work over 12 hours, gaining deformed bones from the stress on their legs for standing up so long. With constant stress and pressure, life expectancy will lower, and so will the condition of the future generation, which affects the quality of the country as a whole. Do we want mindless and nonsensical suffering? Or do we want the improvement of the country as a whole by correcting the mistakes we are currently implementing right now? Choose, patriots, for this can only be decided with your support.
